Mo agrees to 49pc Simba stake

BUSINESSMAN Mohammed Dewji has bowed to government’s regulation stipulating that if a club is run as a commercial company, the majority of the voting shares of that company have to be controlled by members.   Initially, Dewji, wanted to own 51 per cent of the Mainland champions Simba SC shares, which will make him majority shareholder of the club, but the government issued a directive that only 49 per cent should be sold to an individual. Speaking to journalists at a press conference in Dar es Salaam yesterday,the Msimbazi Street’s club Lawyer, Evodius Mtawala said everything in regard to the club’s transformation process was going on smoothly with Dewji agreeing to take 49 per cent stake at the club. YOUNG Africans have vowed to win their CAF Confederations Cup encounter against Rwanda’s Rayon Sports slated this evening at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam.   The Jangwani based side is compelled to win the match to restore back trust from their supporters countrywide; following series of poor results the team has recorded consecutively in their past seven competitive games. TBC to air World Cup free of charge

TANZANIA Broadcasting Corporation (TBC) and Kwese Free Sports Tanzania (KFS) have yesterday signed a contract of cooperation to air live for free the upcoming 21st FIFA World Cup 2018.   C h a m p i o n s h i p matches will be broadcasted live in Kiswahili by TBC ONE, TBC Taifa and TV One, free of any charge. The contract was inked by the TBC Director General, Ayub Rioba and the KFS Director, Joseph Sayi. Rioba said Tanzanians, in both urban and rural areas will enjoy the games that will be broadcasted by local commentators and football analysts. PRESIDENT John Magufuli has been invited to present trophy to the newly crowned Mainland Premier League champions, Simba SC. The Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) has confirmed that Simba will receive the trophy at the end of their game with Kagera Sugar at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam on Sunday. Mahiga: Package of EAC laws 78 so far

THE East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) has enacted a total of 78 laws since its inception in 2001, the Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Dr Augustine Mahiga, disclosed here yesterday.   Responding to a basic question before the National Assembly, the minister pointed out that 20 of them had been ratified by heads of member states of the bloc, while others were at different stages of being signed and endorsed. According to him, the enacted laws aimed at strengthening business, promoting economic growth among member states of the East African Community (EAC) and enabling institutions and other organs of the Community to carry out their mandate. SOME members of the Zanzibar House of Representatives have advised the government to speed up the process of hiring teachers and creating enough room for absorbing pupils, as among the prerequisites for improving education. Debating the budget proposals for the ‘Minister of State (President’s Office - Regional Administration, Local Government, and Special departments), the lawmakers said shortage of teachers and lack of desks constituted a critical problem. FORMER President Benjamin Mkapa is this week expected to convene a meeting in Dar es Salaam to discuss Africa’s position in the global peace and security architecture.   Other two former statesmen, former South Africa and Somalia’s presidents Thabo Mbeki and Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, respectively, are scheduled to attend the UONGOZI Institute organised dialogue. According to a statement by the institute, this meeting is a follow-up to the African Leadership Forum 2017 in South Africa last August. The 2017 Forum was themed “Peace and Security for an Integrated, United and Sustainable Africa,” and was attended by five other former African Heads of State, including Olusegun Obasanjo of Nigeria; Bakili Muluzi of Malawi; Mohamed Marzouki of Tunisia; Jakaya Kikwete of Tanzania and Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of Somalia. State pursues few but strong banks strategy

STATE owned commercial banks’ efficiency and stability are set for a big boost under the institutional consolidating that has started through mergers, the central bank said yesterday. Bank of Tanzania’s (BoT) Deputy Governor Bernard Kibesse told reporters in Dar es Salaam that the mergers aim at retaining few but strong banks, which are highly competent in the provision of financial services. He said the merging process has already begun with the merger of TPB Bank and Twiga Bancorp and will proceed with other state-owned banks to boost efficiency and financial stability in the banking industry. “ Other state owned banks will be combined to create strong, well capitalised and focused banks,” said Dr Kibesse who oversees financial stability and deepening. PRESIDENT Ali Mohamed Shein yesterday warned traders in the Islands against hiking food prices as the Holy month of Ramadan starts.   Dr Shein and his Trade and Industries Minister Ambassador Amina Salum Ali, in separate statements, censured some indiscriminate traders who inflate food prices especially during the Holy month. “ It is important for traders to understand that Ramadan is the recommended month for alms giving, if we have to earn rewards,’’ said President Shein, adding: “Any trader who increases prices should be dealt with according to the laws. We are supposed to give more during the Holy month instead of exploiting people through price hike.” He directed the trade ministry and other respective organs to ensure that traders do not hike prices unjustifiably during Ramadan. The president also ordered smooth supply of social services, including safe and clean water to citizens. TANZANITE One Mining Company has agreed to compensate and pay all taxes it owes the government, conceding some malpractices in its operations in the country.   Chairman of President John Magufuli formed negotiation committee Prof Palamagamba Kabudi and Director of Tanzanite One Faisal Juma signed the payment agreement in Dar es Salaam yesterday. In his post-signing speech, Prof Kabudi who doubles as Legal and Constitutional Affairs Minister said Tanzanite One has agreed to compensate the government after being satisfied that initially there were improper issues that occasioned loss to the government. Chamwino project to be completed this month

AFTER a six month unprecedented delay in the construction of a large irrigation scheme in Chamwino District, Dodoma regional officials came out strongly that the construction will finally be completed by the end of this month.   The Ministry of Water and Irrigation, under its Irrigation Commission is implementing a Fufu-Chiboli irrigation scheme with financial support from the World Food Programme (WFP). The project covers three villages, each with 100 hectares and projected to benefit 400 -people during the dry-season. Floods tragically sweep away Saint Elizabeth hospital nurse

RAINS that pounded most parts of Arusha City on Wednesday morning resulted in floods that swept away a nurse, who had just alighted from a commuter bus, ready to report for work.   The victim, Sister Alodia Mitabaro, worked as a Medical Attendant at Saint Elizabeth Catholic Hospital in Levolosi Ward and according to the reports from the hospital management, she was on her way to work when floods swept her away right at the gate. The Saint Elizabeth Hospital Doctor-in-Charge, Dr Godson Kisanga said that, the late Sister Mitabaro, in her 60s, was braving the early morning rains as she walked towards the hospital but slipped and fell and the water swept her off into the nearest gully. “ There were some young men who were standing nearby, sheltering from the rains and they tried to rescue her, but the water currencies were stronger and faster than them,” said Dr Kisanga, lamenting the tragic loss of one of the hospital’s most dependable members of staff.
