When money flows into the hands of women, everything changes

Image
HAVE spent many hours talking with colleagues in international development about how to tear down the barriers that block women’s progress around the world. Now, we’re confronting the fact that every sector, including our own, has a serious problem with sexual harassment and violence. The norms that allow these abuses are the same ones that disempower the poorest women and only when they are dismantled across the globe will all women and girls be able to lead the lives they want. Practically speaking, though, what can a philanthropic organization like ours do to promote a goal—equality everywhere—that’s impossibly large? We’ve been investing in women’s health for a long time and seen significant progress. But as I spend more time visiting communities and meeting people around the world, I am convinced that we’ll never reach our goals if we don’t also address the systematic way that women and girls are undervalued. With a new focus on women’s economic empowerment, connecting wome

CCTTFA says SGR vital for EAC economy

Image
PRESIDENT John Magufuli and Tanzania as a country has been commended for its decision to construct Standard Gage Railway (SGR) that will use electricity, in which the railway is said to be very vital in the economic growth for Tanzania, East Africa and the Great Lakes Region. The comments were made by the Executive Secretary of the Central Corridor Transit Transport Facilitation Agency (CCTTFA) Capt. Deodonne Dukundane at the end of the international UNCTAD capacitybuilding workshop held in Dar es Salaam. The workshops aimed at promoting sustainable freight transport systems which is crucial to achieving economically efficient, socially viable and environmentally-friendly transportation and logistics services to African region. Capt. Dukundane said 40 per cent of the value of the product range is due to shipping costs, so the SGR rail will reduce the transport costs significantly due to the speed of these trains, thus reducing the freight rate of staying along the way, thus re

The new global watchdog agency, Stopping Tobacco Organisations and Products (STOP) to be run by his foundation, Bloomberg Philanthropies was launched as the 17th World Conference on Tobacco or Health got under way in Cape Town. Public health gains at risk from tobacco industry attacks

Image
PUBLIC health gains made under the World Health Organization’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) are being subjected to unprecedented levels of attack from the tobacco industry. That was the main message from key figures in the fight against tobacco use as the 17th World Conference on Tobacco or Health (WCTOH) got underway in Cape Town, South Africa, Wednesday. Some 2000 delegates – researchers, scientists, UN and civil society representatives, healthcare professionals and policymakers from more than 100 countries – are attending the triennial conference, whose name, “Tobacco or Health,” implies that the two cannot co-exist. During the opening plenary session, speakers called for a renewed focus on the tobacco control policies that are proven to help users quit and to prevent non-users from becoming addicted. The conference theme, Uniting the World For A Tobacco Free Generation, recognises that international collaboration is vital for tackling tobacco use, which

Yanga will not throw in towel, insists Coach

Image
YOUNG Africans have not thrown in a towel in their CAF Champions League campaign and are confident to overturn the 2-1 deficit they suffered at the hands of Township Rollers of Botswana on Tuesday. Township Rollers bossed the first round, first leg tie on Monday at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam, reducing Yanga almost to novices. Two beautifully taken goals on both halves of the match by Lemponye Tshireletso and Motsholetsi Sikele gave Township Rollers a deserved victory. Zambian international Obrey Chirwa equalised for Yanga on the half hour mark to take the match to a goal apiece at the break, but in the end the home side was outplayed on their own turf; Sikele’s winner a justified ending to the match. To beat Township Rollers at home in the return leg clash and advance to the group stage will be a tough mission to the Tanzania Mainland envoys, as they will need to score two clear goals in Gaborone. Regardless, Assistant Coach Shadrack Nsajigwa, has faith in his side, insist

Simba fail to crack Al Masry

Image
SIMBA face monumental task to progress into the next round of CAF Confederation Cup after being held to a 2-2 draw by Egyptian side, Al Masry at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam, yesterday. However, heavy rain disrupted the first round, first leg match in which referee had to stop for at least 40 minutes. Simba will have to win away in order to progress into the next round. Skipper John Bocco took Simba ahead with a well taken penalty kick, but Mohammed Gomaa pulled level a few minutes later before Mohamed Ahmed netted the second from a spot kick. Emmanuel Okwi netted the equaliser midway in the second half. Al Masry played with lots of confidence in the first 45 opening gminutes as Simba chased shadows. Simba were losing concentration, the midfield collapsed and the defence was porous. They lacked precision from the rear to the attack. Al Masry started brightly and forced a corner kick just two minutes into the game as Aishi Manula dived low to parry of a shot from the rig

Madina second in Entebbe Ladies Open

Image
TANZANIA’s golf star, Madina Iddi put strong efforts in Uganda only to narrowly miss this year’s Entebbe Ladies Open Champion title at the Entebbe Golf Club in Uganda over the weekend. Madina who was searching her second title in Entebbe, finished second behind the host Irene Nakalembe by a stroke. Madina told the ‘Daily News’ from Arusha yesterday after arriving from Uganda that the tournament was good, but she could not handle the last round pressure. She said that it was one of the toughest competitions as her closest competitor Nakalembe took control of second round. Madina had flying start, hitting 77 gross at first round to lead Nakalembe by a stroke going to final round of the 36 holes battle. Despite impressive second round that carded 72 gross she could not repeat her 2013 success that won the event for the first time in Uganda soil. Nakalembe used her home advantage well to hit 70 gross to beat Madina by a stroke to clinch the diadem for the fourth consecutive year. Ma

Bocco earns Stars recall, Mkude dropped

Image
SIMBA skipper, John Bocco has been recalled in the national team, Taifa Stars however surprisingly the in-form midfielder maestro Jonas Mkude has been dropped in the squad. Taifa Stars head coach, Salum Mayanga has announced the 23-man squad for the two friendly matches against Algeria and Congo to be held on March 22 in Algeria and March 27 in Dar es Salaam respectively. Apart from the surprising exclusion of Mkude, who Simba’s Frenchman tactician Pierre Lechantre has named the best midfielder, Mayanga also shocked football supporters by recalling striker Thomas Ulimwengu from the Swedenbased side AFC Eskilstuna. Ulimwengu has been out of action for quite some time due to long knee injury. Mayanga has also included five players Mohamed Issa, Abdulaziz Makame, Mudathir Yahya, Hamis Abdallah, Abdulrahman Mohammed and Faisal Salum who were in the Zanzibar Heroes squad that finished second in the last

Image
DEFENDING champions Young Africans return to Mainland Premier League action today, as they face Kagera Sugar at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam. Yanga will move within three points adrift league leaders Simba, if they win the match, as they will post 43 points from 20 matches. George Lwandamina’s side is currently settled in the second position on the log with 40 points, six points behind archrivals Simba, but they have played a game less. Yanga will come into the match fresh from a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Botswana’s Township Rollers in CAF Champions League first round, first leg tie at the National Stadium last Tuesday. They will be eager to appease their fans and put the bad memory behind them by resuming their title defence campaign strongly. Victory for Yanga against Kagera Sugar will further pile pressure on Simba, who lost two crucial points in the last game against Stand United, after being held to a 3-3 draw and failed to open an eight-point gap at the league’s summi

Simba aware of Port Said toll

Image
SIMBA’s Head Coach Pierre Lechantre is aware of the heavy burden the team shoulder in the CAF Confederation Cup away fixture to Egyptians Al Masry, after failing to take advantage of their home ground on Wednesday. The Msimbazi Reds were held to a 2-2 draw by Al Masry in the first round, first leg encounter at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam. Simba will travel to Port Said next week and will be required to snatch an away win against the Boss of Canal to progress into the next round of the continental second tier club championship. A draw of more than two goals will also work in favour of Simba. Prior to the match, the Frenchman claimed that they needed to get good results at home because they will be going to face a heavy challenge away against Al Masry. He said all they wanted was to win at home something which would have helped them in the return leg tie, but Simba have had themselves to blame for showing a below par performance in the first 45 opening minutes that gave

TASAF beneficiaries face business challenges

Image
LACK of proper knowledge in maintaining farms, running small businesses and livestock keeping is hindering poor households benefiting from the Tanzania Social Action Fund (TASAF) cash grants. The poor knowledge hinders them from excelling further and therefore affects the sustainability of their income generating activities. This was observed by some of the beneficiaries of the programme during a visit by some members from the media in Chato and Geita districts yesterday to observe the implementation of TASAF. A beneficiary from Isamilo village at Kamuhanga Ward in Geita District, Sabina Msangwa, a mother of seven children, has managed to acquire 20 goats and four cows through the programme. According to her, since she began keeping the livestock, she has never obtained any expert opinion on how to operate. In most cases, she seeks advice from fellow villagers on how to herd livestock. After her husband passed away in 2002, Msangwa and the children lived a very miserable life, a

Plastic rice reports are false, China firmly states

Image
THE Chinese government has trashed rumours doing the rounds, linking the East Asian economic giant with plastic rice, reiterating that its rice was safe. At a press conference on the sidelines of the National People’s Congress in Beijing, while fielding questions from journalists, China’s Minister for Agriculture, Mr Han Changfu, said he has neither heard nor seen such a thing. The minister was asked to comment on rumours trending on social networks associated with alleged substandard rice flooding African markets. The Tanzanian government, through the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, did, in July last year, allay fears over the plastic rice saga, denying reports over the presence of such fake merchandise in the local market. “China’s rice is safe. I haven’t heard the rumours you have heard. I have never seen that as a minister for agriculture,” Mr Han told the tightly-packed conference. Meanwhile, the minister affirmed that the country was willing to share its develo
