Mkapa, others convene in Dar over global peace
FORMER President Benjamin Mkapa is this week expected to convene a meeting in Dar es Salaam to discuss Africa’s position in the global peace and security architecture.
Other two former statesmen, former South Africa and Somalia’s presidents Thabo Mbeki and Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, respectively, are scheduled to attend the UONGOZI Institute organised dialogue.
According to a statement by the institute, this meeting is a follow-up to the African Leadership Forum 2017 in South Africa last August. The 2017 Forum was themed “Peace and Security for an Integrated, United and Sustainable Africa,”
and was attended by five other former African Heads of State, including Olusegun Obasanjo of Nigeria; Bakili Muluzi of Malawi; Mohamed Marzouki of Tunisia; Jakaya Kikwete of Tanzania and Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of Somalia.
The meeting was also attended by over 100 key African leaders, experts and thinkers working on issues of peace and security. The institute said yesterday that the forum examined the complex dynamics that fuel conflicts on the continent and how Africa can practically navigate the dynamics to secure lasting peace. Specifically,
Africa’s position in the global security design was highlighted as atopic that needed further discussion, which prompted the institute to organise the follow-up meeting. This week’s meeting will focus on specific conflict areas in the region, discussing cases of the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Federal Republic of Somalia.
Mr Mbeki is expected to deliver the keynote address while Mr Mohamud and Executive Secretary of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region Ambassador Zachary Muburi-Muita are scheduled to speak at the event.
Besides the former Heads of State, the meeting will attract 40 highlevel practitioners and experts from across Africa. The meeting resolutions will be shared in a public statement at the conclusion of the event.
