1.8bn/- helps to improve infrastructure in 500 primary schools

AT least 500 primary schools in three regions including Dodoma have improved sanitation infrastructure after receiving subsidies through the Health Promotion and Systems Strengthening (HPSS) project for the past five years.   This was revealed here over the weekend by Monitoring and Evaluation Coordinator of HPSS, Mr Ally Kebby, pointing out that the main goal of the project worth 1.8bn/- is to increase the quality of latrines at schools and household level. “ We’ve also managed to raise awareness on significant health issues and knowledge to improve health to three regions carrying out the project,” said Mr Kebby during Dodoma Regional Health Promotion meeting. HPSS is a project funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) in collaboration with the government of Tanzania and it has been implemented by Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute in Dodoma, Morogoro and Shinyanga. Taxman’s collection hits 12tri/- in nine months

Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) has collected a total of 11.78tri/- in nine month from July to March of the 2017/18 Fiscal Year compared to 10.86tri/- gained in corresponding period of 2017/18.   The collection, according to Taxman’s report released today (Tuesday), is an increase of 8.45 per cent compared to the corresponding period .The data made available to Daily News Digital indicates that December last year, the collection soared by 15.58 per cent to 1.64tri/- compared to only 1.41tri/- in the corresponding period. It further revealed that the month of September was not good for the taxman as its collection went down by 2.37 per cent compared to the same month of 2016/17 FY. But the Taxman improved the collection in the following six months and December was the best month since it managed to collect 1.64tri/-.

Varsity students advised to acquire financial management skills

HIGHER learning students have been advised to acquire needed basic life skill trainings so that they can face various challenges while at universities and after they graduate. Green Hope Foundation Basic Life Skills Facilitator, Mr Manjale Makongoro gave the advice here when addressing the University of Dodoma students during a capacity building programme, which aimed at equipping students with the knowledge so that they can make right decisions. The training, which was organised by Green Hope under facilitation of Vodacom Foundation is part of the ongoing training in which more than 3,000 students from three universities in the country are set to benefit from the capacity building on financial literacy, leadership and basic skills so that they can manage their lives after graduation. “ If they really want to accomplish their dreams, they must have basic life skills,” he said. March Inflation rates fall as prices maintain stability

INFLATION rate for last month has decreased to 3.9 per cent from 4.1 per cent recorded in February this year on decline of food and nonfood prices. The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) Population Census and Social Statistics Director, Mr Ephraim Kwesigabo said in Dar es Salaam yesterday that the last time inflation to decrease at this level was in 2004 when it decreased to 3.6 per cent. Food and non-alcoholic beverages inflation rate decreased to 4.7 per cent from 5.4 per cent recorded in February 2018. He said the overall index went up to 112.70 in March, 2018 from 108.44 recorded in the corresponding month last year. CPI has shown a relatively stable movement of prices from March, 2017 to March, this year. In addition, Annual Headline Inflation Rates over the same period have decreased tremendously from 6.4 per cent in March, 2017 to 3.9 per cent in March, 2018. NMB distributes 300 computers to schools countrywide

NCAA investment building finalised

THE construction of the tallest Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority (NCAA) investment building in Arusha region is at final touches, set to complete in next June, ready to provide magnificent tourism vibes. The project to erect the building started in 2013 and the Natural Resources and Tourism Minister Dr Hamisi Kigwangallah inspected the construction development yesterday. Dr Kigwangallah explained that upon its completion, stakeholders would offer opportunities to tourist service providers to allocate their offices within the complex. TANZANIA’S medal hopes in the Club Games continued dwindle after Failuna Matanga crashed out of the 10,000m race held in yesterday in Gold Coast, Australia. Failuna who runs in both 5000m and 10,000m races was overpowered by her East African fellows from Uganda and Kenya who eventually claimed all top three positions. The Tanzanian lady finished 12th overall after spending 32:22.09 ahead of India’s Loganathan Suriya who was timed at32:23.56. FARU Volleyball Club player, Michael Ngong’e has landed a scholarship to study and play volleyball in Kampala, Uganda. Club’s Head Coach Nasoro Sharifu told the ‘Daily News’ yesterday that agreement has been reached with Kampala based Namugongo Secondary School for Ngong’e to join. Sharifu said that Ngong’e will join Form Five to continue with studies at the school and at the same time, sharpen his volleyball skills there. He expressed his pleasure for the move, saying it was a big step for him (Ngong’e), his club and the country at large. “I’m very happy for him, this is what I want to do for the game… working hard and achieve development goal, which can be attained by promoting and developing the game to the higher level,” Sharifu said. THE government yesterday ordered immediate reinstatement of public servants hired before May 20, 2004 and later dismissed over failure to present valid form four certificates.   The formerly sacked employees on permanent and temporary terms will be paid all their accrued salaries since their dismissal and they will continue with their jobs to their retirement age. The minister of State in the President’s Office, Public Service Management and Good Governance, George Mkuchika said in parliament that the decision to reinstate the officers does not involve employees who had presented fake academic certificates in their employment documents. HUNDREDS of women thronged the Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner’s (RC) office yesterday with claims against their negligent partners in the upkeep of children. The desperate mothers defied the heavy rains that pounded many parts of the city and its environs, determined to meet RC Paul Makonda for help. Mr Makonda had on March 8, this year, speaking at the International Women’s Day celebrations, invited all women in the region who have been deserted by their parental partners to report to his office yesterday for legal assistance. Investors get 7-day ultimatum to surrender title deeds

LIVESTOCK and Fisheries Minister Luhaga Mpina has issued a seven-day ultimatum to Triple S Beef Company and Agri Vision to surrender to the government their title deed for land on which the meat factory stands.   He said the investors have failed to develop the project for 11 years now since they were given the area. He also instructed the Treasury Registrar’s office to immediately start verifying various properties in the factory. According to Mr Mpina, many machines have been stolen from the industry. He ordered the arrest of the company owner who was entrusted with the guard of the industry and all properties within the premises. He said the industry will be under the Regional Commissioner’s office until further notice.

NECTA extends examination registration time to April 30

THE National Examination Council of Tanzania (NECTA) has given a one month extension of registering for Certificate of Secondary Education Examination and qualifying test as private candidate.   NECTA Communications Officer, John Nchimbi said the extension runs starting April 1 and was due to the fact that many candidates had failed to meet the earlier deadline due to a number of reasons. “There will be no more extension after this given time, those who will fail they will have to register after paying the 65,000/-,” said Nchimbi. EAST African Court of Justice has dismissed East African Law Society (EALS) filed walk to work case over insufficient evidence. The First Instance Division said in its judgment that the applicant produced neither evidence nor death certificates to substantiate killing of people.   There was also no medical report to justify injuries, an indication of complete lack of evidence against the Ugandan government. Reading the judgment, Deputy Principal Judge Isaac Lenaola said the applicant’s case was weak and that there was no ground to conclude that the government of Uganda committed the acts as alleged nor were there violation of the Treaty for the Establishment of the East African Community (EAC) or laws of Uganda under its Constitution. THE Zanzibar Relief and Development Foundation (ZANRDEF) is on-track to hand over boreholes to residents of Mahonda constituency to provide clean and safe drinking water to people including students. This was revealed here yesterday by ZANRDEF Secretary, Mr Ali Mohamed Haji when the Second Vice-President Ambassador Seif Ali inspected the ongoing construction of boreholes in Unguja north. Mr Haji said his foundation, in collaboration with Turkey embassy in Tanzania, have planned to construct 40 boreholes in support of government’s efforts to end water crisis in the Islands with rising population.
