Shein censures arbitrary food price hike in Ramadan
PRESIDENT Ali Mohamed Shein yesterday warned traders in the Islands against hiking food prices as the Holy month of Ramadan starts.
Dr Shein and his Trade and Industries Minister Ambassador Amina Salum Ali, in separate statements, censured some indiscriminate traders who inflate food prices especially during the Holy month. “
It is important for traders to understand that Ramadan is the recommended month for alms giving, if we have to earn rewards,’’ said President Shein, adding: “Any trader who increases prices should be dealt with according to the laws.
We are supposed to give more during the Holy month instead of exploiting people through price hike.” He directed the trade ministry and other respective organs to ensure that traders do not hike prices unjustifiably during Ramadan.
The president also ordered smooth supply of social services, including safe and clean water to citizens. Dr Shein said, “Delivery of other services must be improved throughout the month and beyond.”
He thanked farmers for producing enough produce, including 8,539.39 tonnes, which were procured for 119bn/- during the 2017/2018 period. Ambassador Amina vowed to ensure commodity prices are kept normal during the month,
adding that the Ramadan was an opportunity to further grip on good deeds, including avoiding to cheat customers. The month of Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and is observed by all Muslims Worldwide as the fasting period, Sawm,
with all adult believers supposed to abstain from food, drinks and any other forbidden acts under Islamic teachings, from dawn to sunset
