At U.N., China delays U.S. bid to blacklist ships, companies over North Korea

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - China delayed a U.S. request for a United Nations Security Council committee to blacklist 33 ships, 27 shipping companies, and a Taiwan man for violating international sanctions on North Korea, diplomats said on Friday.  North Korean leader Kim Jong Un attends a grand military parade celebrating the 70th founding anniversary of the Korean People's Army at the Kim Il Sung Square in Pyongyang, in this photo released by North Korea's Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) February 9 2018. China did not give a reason for placing a hold o

Businesses try to coax Trump from tariffs brink, aides quarrel

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Donald Trump, after shocking markets with the risk of a global trade war, came under intense pressure on Friday from U.S. business interests and foreign trading partners to moderate his threat to slap tariffs on steel and aluminium imports. U.S. President Donald Trump announces that the United States will impose tariffs of 25 percent on steel imports and 10 percent on imported aluminum during a meeting at the White House in Washington, U.S., March 1, 2018. REUTERS/Kevin Lamarque Trump dispatched pro-tariff advisers Wilbur Ross and Peter Navarro to TV news studios to defend his plan, while White House aides scrambled to downplay the prospect of a resignation by free trade advocate Gary Cohn, the top White House economic adviser, over the matter. Cohn is part of a faction in Trump’s administration that warned the Republican president for months not to threaten the 25-percent steel and 10-percent aluminium tariffs that he pledged to impose in a ch

Teacher tried to create 'army of children' to launch terror attacks in London

LONDON (Reuters) - A British supporter of Islamic State was found guilty on Friday of trying to recruit children he was teaching into an“army” of jihadists to help carry out a wave of attacks across London. Umar Haque, 25, showed the children beheading videos and other violent militant propaganda, forced them to re-enact deadly attacks on the British capital and made them role-play attacking police officers. “His plan was to create an army of children to assist with multiple terrorist attacks throughout London,” said Dean Haydon, head of the Metropolitan Police’s Counter Terrorism Command.“He tried and he did, we believe, radicalise vulnerable children from the ages of 11 to 14.” Despite having no qualifications and being employed as an administrator, police say Haque used the guise of teaching Islamic studies to groom 110 children into becoming militants at the Lantern of Knowledge, a small private Islamic school, and at a madrassa connected to the Ripple Road Mosque in east London.

U.N. points to likely war crimes in Syria's Ghouta

GENEVA (Reuters) - Syrian government air strikes on the besieged Syrian enclave of eastern Ghouta and shelling from the rebel-held zone into Damascus probably constitute war crimes and must be prosecuted, the top U.N. human rights official said on Friday. Zeid Ra’ad al-Hussein, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, said the perpetrators of such crimes in Syria should know they were being identified and that dossiers were being built for future prosecutions. In one of the deadliest offensives of Syria’s war, government air strikes and bombardment have killed hundreds of people over 12 days in eastern Ghouta, an area of besieged towns and farms in the last major rebel-held region near the capital. The U.N. Security Council called on Feb. 24 for a 30-day ceasefire in eastern Ghouta, where 400,000 people live. “Despite this rare example of unanimity, civilians in Eastern Ghouta have reported that air strikes and shelling continue,” Zeid told the Geneva rights forum during an

According to the report, Kenya’s GDP growth projection is expected to rise to 5.7 percent, an improvement from the previous quarter’s 4.6 percent growth projection. Despite the improved projections, Kenya’s growth is still moving at a slower pace than regional competitors Tanzania, Ethiopia, and Uganda. “The period of political uncertainty that plagued Kenya’s economy is gradually fading, and this bodes well for the country’s economic prospects. However, Kenya still has some distance to go before it matches the growth seen in other EAC nations,” said Michael Armstrong, Regional Director of ICAEW Middle East, Africa and South Asia. Tanzania and Ethiopia are expected to remain as two of Africa’s fastest growing economies, with their growth r

Stand United confident to disrupt ‘mighty’ Simba run

Image
STAND United Assistant Coach Athuman Bilal has his sights set on stopping Simba’s record-breaking unbeaten run in the Mainland Premier League. The Shinyanga-based side will travel to Dar es Salaam to face the runaway league leaders at the National Stadium tomorrow. Simba’s outstanding unbeaten season continued on Monday, when they chalked up a 13th league victory by beating Mbao FC 5-0 at the National Stadium. That left Pierre Lechantre’s side with a commanding lead at the top of the table with a remarkable 45 points from 19 matches. Speaking about his team preparations toward Simba’s tie, Bilal said their 4-3 win on penalties after a barren draw in the Azam Sports Federation Cup (ASFC) match against Dodoma FC has boosted his players’ morale. Stand United’s recent form is giving confidence on the technical bench. They won 1-0 over Singida United at CCM Namfua Stadium in Singida and they drew a goalless draw against Mbeya City at the Sokoine Memorial Stadium in Mbeya. Bilal hopes

Yanga win, intensify title race…Break Ndanda jinx at Nangwanda Stadium

Image
DEFENDING champions Young Africans broke the hoodoo after defeating Ndanda 2-1 away at Nangwanda Stadium in Mtwara, yesterday, to intensify the Mainland Premier League title race. First half goals from Pius Buswita and Hassan Kessy brightened the day for Yanga, but Nassoro Kapama pulled one back in the second half. It was the first victory for Yanga against Ndanda at the Nangwanda Sijaona Stadium and the Jangwani Street lads closed the gap with leaders Simba. Following their victory, Yanga have consolidated their second position with 40 points and are five-point adrift Simba. Yanga have never posted a win there since Ndanda were promoted to the premiership four seasons ago. Still Ndanda looked superior to their visitors in terms of footwork, flair and versatility. Former Taifa Stars player, Mrisho Ngasa who was the best player of the match, seemed to have regained the form and he was the one who carved the assist that earned his team a consolation in the early minutes of the sec

Dar maintains clean sheet in economic crime Tanzania

Image
EITHER Tanzania is free from cases of ‘economic crime,’ or the country could be among those ranked very low, Dar es Salaam apparently has escaped mention in the just released report findings. South African organisations continue to report the highest instances of economic crime in the world, with economic crime reaching its highest level over the past decade, according to PwC’s Biennial Global Economic Crime Survey released yesterday. Kenya ranks second at 75 per cent, becoming the only East African country to make into the rather dark list. Even developed world isn’t spared, because France has taken the third place with 71 per cent. However, according to the report made available in Arusha yesterday, half of the top ten countries that reported economic crime were from Africa, making the situation on the continent more than dire. South Africa tops the bill with around 77 per cent of SA organisations reported to have experienced economic crime; while fraud committed by consumers

Tanzania making strides in women representation

Image
TANZANIA is leading in the East African Community (EAC) member states for having a good number of women representations in various leadership positions, according to statistics from the Inter-parliamentary Union (IPU). Although the country is yet to attain the envisaged 50/50 threshold, Tanzania Gender Network Program (TGNP) Mtandao is happy that the number of women in leadership position is convincing, although more needs to be done to attain gender parity. Speaking at a Women Leadership Summit 2018, TGNP Mtandao Executive Director, Lilian Liundi said worldwide Tanzania was at position 25 with 36.9 percent of women parliamentarians, while Rwanda which was top in the list had 61.3 percent. She was however quick to point out that it was dismaying to see political parties that in the real sense were supposed to have women representation, are still lagging behind on putting trust on women. According to the TGNP boss, there is no single woman at the position of chairpersons of all r

Population set at 54.2 million…Mpango warns against fabricating statistics

TANZANIA’s population is projected to grow to 54.2 million people by this year, half of whom are minors below the age of 18, with a chilling revelation that the dependency rate from people aged between 15 and 64 from dependents aged below 15 and above 65 years is at 92 per cent. The latest estimates indicate an increase from 46 million people which was recorded during the Population and Housing Census conducted by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) in 2012. Finance and Planning Minister, Dr Philip Mpango, unveiled the projections covering 2013 and 2035 in Dar es Salaam yesterday, with figures showing that there is an increase of 1.6 million people in the country each year. Dr Mpango explained that the census data with other information from administrative sources and surveys are of paramount importance in evaluating and monitoring international development programmes, like the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Africa Agenda of 2063.The projection shows that there w

Drugs-linked ships not Tz’s - Mahiga

Image
IT is now official; the Tanzanian flagged ships that were seized overseas with illicit drugs were deregistered last year. The Minister of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Dr Augustine Mahiga, made the revelation yesterday at the Julius Nyerere International Convention Centre (JNICC) in Dar es Salaam. Dr Mahiga disowned the Tanzania-flagged ships that Dutch and Greek authorities recently reported to have been found with drugs and explosives on board, when he met ambassadors from five countries that have membership in the UN Security Council. They were from USA, Russia, China, France and United Kingdom (UK). On January 19, this year, President John Magufuli suspended the registration of new ships until further notice, barely a day after Vice-President Samia Suluhu Hassan announced deregistration of two Tanzania-flagged ships that Dutch and Greek authorities had reported to have found with drugs and explosives on board. The Head of State issued the directive at JNICC when
