Fred’s free-kick gives Shakhtar Donetsk narrow lead over Roma

Image
Shakhtar Donetsk came from behind to beat Roma 2-1 in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 meeting thanks to a spectacular winner from the Brazil midfielder Fred. The 24-year-old Fred showed why some of Europe’s top clubs are reportedly scouting him with a perfect free-kick in the 71st minute. Facundo Ferreyra had levelled for the Ukrainian club early in the second half after Cengiz Ãœnder continued his fine run of form by giving Roma the lead shortly before half-time. Roma dominated the first half but it was the Italian club’s Alisson who was the busier of the two goalkeepers. Shakhtar, who are playing their home matches in Kharkiv as the stadium in Donetsk was damaged by the conflict in Ukraine, had early chances but Roma went the closest when Edin Dzeko saw his attempt parried from close range by Andriy Pyatov, who then did well to kick away the ball. Roma started to take control and took a deserved lead four minutes from half-time. Dzeko put in a perfectly-weighte

José Mourinho questions focus on substitute Paul Pogba after Sevilla draw

Image
• Mourinho unhappy with medical department after Ander Herrera injury • United manager praises Scott McTominay after 0-0 draw in Spain. José Mourinho refused to be drawn on the absence of Paul Pogba from his starting lineup in Seville where Manchester United held on for a dogged scoreless draw. Instead United’s manager had praise for the “fantastic” performance of Scott McTominay, who started in Pogba’s place, and called on Old Trafford to produce “a big Champions League night” in three weeks’ time. “I think we finished the game with more space than we had in the beginning, more close to the possibility of scoring a goal,” Mourinho said, batting away the suggestion United might have been relieved to emerge with a clean sheet after David de Gea again produced a series of fine saves.

José Mourinho continues bizarre and divisive power-play over Paul Pogba

Image
United manager’s omission of France midfielder from the starting XI suggests relationship is still subject to turbulence Well, we got there in the end. Grudgingly, belatedly and against the manager’s better judgment. But with 17 minutes gone in this Champions League first leg, on a breezy, boisterous night in Seville, José Mourinho found himself forced by circumstance and bad luck into playing his most talented midfielder in his favourite position. It is, of course, important not to be drawn too deeply into another Mourinho psychodrama. On a scale of one to Ramos the current half-glimpsed friction with Paul Pogba is hardly likely to rate a top-10 mention in the all-time annals of toxic José-dom. Plus, Mourinho was correct to suggest after this 0-0 draw that the return leg at Old Trafford will be an entirely different occasion; and that this was a good result, albeit on the back of another choked and sputtering performance as United were pushed back repeatedly by an increasingl

Manchester United overrun by Sevilla but David de Gea’s saves ensure parity

Image
And so to Old Trafford. Sevilla had not been able to defeat Manchester United at the Sánchez Pizjuán but their supporters recognised they had been close and there is still hope they can reach the quarter-final of this competition for the first time in their history. United, too, may consider this a decent result. Often overrun, able to muster only one shot on target, two superb saves from David de Gea kept them in a game with no goals. A game where to start with Paul Pogba had been absent, too – and that is likely to occupy the next few days almost as much as this performance will.

'Dirty meat': Shocking hygiene failings discovered in US pig and chicken plants

Image
Shocking hygiene failings have been discovered in some of the US’s biggest meat plants, as a new analysis reveals that as many as 15% (one in seven) of the US population suffers from foodborne illnesses annually. A joint investigation by the Bureau of Investigative Journalism (TBIJ) and the Guardian found that hygiene incidents are at numbers that experts described as “deeply worrying”. US campaigners are calling once again for the closure of a legal loophole that allows meat with salmonella to be sold in the human supply chain, and also warn about the industry’s push to speed up production in the country’s meat plants. And UK campaigners warn that the UK could be flooded with “dirty meat” if a US trade deal is signed post-Brexit. Animals farmed: welcome to our series The unpublished US- government records highlight numerous specific incidents including: Diseased poultry meat that had been condemned found in containers used to hold edible food products; Pig carcasses piling
