Call to improve the lot of ignored old people

Image
THE Good Samaritan Social Service Trust-Tanzania (GSSST) and other campaigners for promoting the welfare of elderly people have called on the government to fulfill its promises by improving the quality of healthcare services for them. The GSSST Executive Director, Mr Elisha Mwamkinga, told reporters over the weekend that the access to free medical services hadn’t become a reality yet, as elders were being asked to pay for, among others like Laboratory tests, X-rays, ultra sound and CT scan services. He pointed out that, in some areas, medicines were in short supplies. However, he appreciated the government’s efforts to improve health services, not only for elders but for women and children, as well as other Tanzanians. He asked the government to sustain their tempo of ensuring that elders got free health services. A 76-year-old woman, Kijazi Seleman, a Dar es Salaam resident, said the government needed to do more to help elders, especially in medical service delivery. Earlier, Mr Mwa

Rapist of girl, four, loses appeal, jailed for life

Image
WHILE Members of Parliament are pushing for law amendments to have rapists castrated, the Court of Appeal has upheld the life imprisonment sentence imposed on a resident of Mbeya Region, Posolo Wilson, alias Mwalyego, for raping a minor over superstitious beliefs.   According to records, Wilson, the appellant, had raped the young girl (name withheld) in compliance with the advice of a traditional doctor based in Iringa Region, that he would become rich. However, things didn’t turn out in his favour, and he will have to spend the rest of his life in prison for his barbaric act. Although the prosecution had attempted to save him by supporting his appeal on grounds that he was not properly identified as the culprit and confession evidence relied upon by the trial court to ground his conviction was not proper, the appellate court came up with different findings to hold him responsible. Justices Bernard Luanda, Batuel Mmilla and Gerald Ndika agreed with the prosecution’s position that the

Blue pearl opposes 4bn/- payment

Image
THE rental charges dispute involving Blue Pearl Hotel and Apartments Limited and Ubungo Plaza Limited has taken a new turn following the hotel to seek intervention of Court of Appeal to stay the execution of the decree for 4bn/- payments.   In an application that has been filed under certificate of urgency, Blue Pearl Hotel and Apartments Limited, as applicant, has advanced several grounds, stating that if the execution is carried out it would cause substantial loss and may pre-empt the decision of the Court of Appeal in the intended appeal. Advocate Henry Massaba, for applicant, further states that his client has already lodged a notice of appeal against the whole judgment and decree of the High Court dated November 3, 2017 and that the application for stay has been filed without inordinate delays. He states that security shall be given for performance of the decree in question and that the appeal that would be filed to challenge findings of the High Court stands a good chance of su

TANZANITE can only be found in Mirerani Hills, right? Well, wrong there is a new site that has just been discovered to have ample reserves of the rare blue gemstones but at the moment this is a secret tightly kept in the State House’s vaults. President John Magufuli, who visited the Tanzanite Mining quarries in the Mirerani Hills of Simanjiro District, Manyara Region over the weekend, revealed that there is another location where the blue gemstones have been discovered but did not divulge further. “We have built a wall surrounding the mining quarries of Mirerani in order to curb the notorious theft and smuggling of Tanzanite,” said the Head of State, while inaugurating the 25 kilometres’ long fort, described as the ‘Great Wall of Mirerani.’ He said that state organs were still on track to investigate the mineral smuggling rackets. “We have also just discovered a new location where there are ample Tanzanite reserves underground. Soon, this location will also be surrounded by a wall be

Simba test tricky Mtibwa Sugar

Image
SIMBA SC will be looking to extend their lead at the helm of the Premier League table when they face resilient Mtibwa Sugar at bumpy Jamhuri Stadium, Morogoro this afternoon.   It will be the second consecutive away match for the Msimbazi Street side who posted a thrilling 2-0 triumph over Njombe Mji at Saba Saba ground, a victory that enabled them to reopen a three point gap over their traditional rivals Young Africans. Hence a win today will make the six points clear of their closet pursuers. But, history and records show that the match won’t be easy for the leaders as Mtibwa Sugar scarcely lose at home. The return of midfielder Haruna Niyonzima who missed a number of the team’s engagements this season due to injury, likely to revamp the team’s midfield department as far as maximisation of three points for the championship race this season is concerned. The Rwandan import played a pivotal role towards Simba’s success against Njombe Mji after he was introduced in the second half of

Image of Arusha city hyped as key to luring tourists

PRESIDENT John Magufuli winded up his three-day tour of Arusha and Manyara regions yesterday, asking authorities and residents to ensure the precinct’s image remains in pristine condition. “Arusha is bouncing back to its exemplary urban centre that it used to be; this is a tourist destination, centre for diplomatic relations and conferences...it is an important Tanzanian city whose image must not be tarnished at any excuse,” said President Magufuli. He expressed satisfaction over the city’s infrastructure development, saying the roads were in good condition and the government was further striving to build more roads and providing other social services, citing the ambitious water project currently under implementation. Countrywide night patrols to bring sanity on major roads

Image
IN an effort to curb night criminal activities, highway bandits, and especially accidents, the police intend to establish full-time night patrolling vehicles to comb all the major roads in the country. “We are going to deploy police patrols from 6 pm to 6am, the idea is to ensure safety among travellers and other road users during the night, in addition to ensuring rapid response whenever the need arises in other remote areas,” said the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Simon Sirro in Arusha on Saturday. He pointed out that, while criminal cases have dropped by remarkable margin, there is still the need to ensure that racketeers do not take advantage of the night cover to devise new vices or hound gullible travellers, but also the presence of the police on roads at night will help curb accidents of private vehicles that travel at twilight. “ Traffic offences are on escalation, for instance, between January and March, this year alone, there were 459,845 cases, compares with 413,218 ca

New era dawns for police

Image
PRESIDENT John Magufuli has committed 10 billion/- for his own brainchild project which will involve the construction of new police quarters, first in Arusha and later on, across the nation as the project widens. “ The soon to be built houses will be strictly for low ranking police officers, because these are the ones who do all the work, but also live in squalid conditions,” the Head of State announced, shortly after witnessing military drills and demonstrations by members of the Police Force in Arusha Region. Speaking at the Sheikh Amri AbeidStadium where the event was held yesterday, Dr Magufuli instructed Members of Parliament (MPs) through their constituencies’ development funds, to pool into the new project which will ensure that policemen and women are housed in respectable homes. President Magufuli decided to introduce the new project of housing police officers after he inaugurated the 18 new police quarters that had just been built to replace the houses that were razed by f

JPM: No to denationalisation

PROPERTIES that were nationalised from religious institutions during the Arusha Declaration will never be returned back, notwithstanding pleas by the spiritual leaders. President John Magufuli, speaking at the consecration mass to install the new Catholic Archbishop Isaac Massawe at Saint Theresa Parish here yesterday, turned down the requests, describing the process to revert ownerships on all properties, which earlier belonged to churches, mosques and other private or communal institutions as “difficult and cumbersome.” “Even Archbishop Polycarp Cardinal Pengo has severally written to me, listing nationalised properties that once belonged to the church, requesting, if possible, they be given back but my answer is no,” said President Magufuli. He was responding to another request from Saint Theresia Vicarage to give back to the church the government run Naura Primary School, which the catholic church owned previously and is located next to the Cathedral. The church management cited
