Beijing plan to directly benefit Dar

CHINESE People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) has supported the implementation of a multi-billion dollar development plan, the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), which envisages benefiting East Africa, among others. Tanzania, Kenya, Ethiopia, Djibouti and Egypt are among African countries that will directly benefit from the six-economic corridor project, spanning 68 countries and covering over 60 per cent of the world population. China, the world’s second largest economy, last year invited Tanzania to the BRI forum in Beijing, not only because of her historic and natural part of the Maritime Silk, but more importantly, because of the special traditional friendship between the two countries. The meeting, among other things, drew up a blueprint for the future development of the initiative. BRI is a significant development strategy by the Chinese government to promote economic cooperation among countries along the proposed Belt and Road routes. The grand vision was launched in

IMTU flops in attempt to dodge 3bn/- rental fee

Image
HIGH Court’s Land Division has ordered two plaintiffs to pay the government over 2.6bn/- as rental fees of the premises from where they are currently operating. The amount includes 40m/- monthly rent payable from September 2012 to date and 200m/- awarded as counterclaim to the defendant, the National Development Corporation (NDC), against the plaintiffs. Judge Moses Mzuna ruled in favour of the state owned NDC, dismissing with costs the land suit lodged by the two plaintiffs, the International Medical and Technological University (IMTU) and Registered Trustees of Vignan Educational Foundation Bangalore, India. “We appreciate, much as IMTU had conferred degrees to many Tanzania’s doctors who graduated from the university. However, upon being fully fledged, the plaintiff must pay rent so that even the government can benefit from collected tuition fees,” the judge said. He said in the judgment dated February 27, 2018 that exception from payment of tax should not be construed to mea

Fertiliser suppliers upsetting farmers - Tizeba

Image
THE willingness amongst farmers to apply fertilisers is immense but they are being let down by suppliers, the Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Dr Charles Tizeba has said. Dr Tizeba voiced the misgivings at a press conference over the weekend where among other things he announced the indicative prices for sowing fertilisers - DAP. He pointed out that bulk procurement of fertilisers would help in boosting the application of fertilisers and the government’s goal was to ensure that this year the supply reached 200,000 tonnes, up from 100,000 tonnes procured last year. “Indicative prices for Eastern Zone, Central Zone, Southern Zone and Northern Zone will range between 47,600 and 57,000 for a 50kg bag. These prices have increased by eight per cent when compared to theprevious ones,” he said. Elaborating on the move by the government to embark on bulk procurement of fertilisers, Dr Tizeba said the fifth phase government led by President John Pombe Magufuli was c

You are safe, Tanzanians in S. Africa assured

TANZANIANS living in South Africa are not hunted, despite the recent murder of a Tanzanian student in Johannesburg, the government assured yesterday.   The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East Africa, Prof Adolf Mkenda said his office believes the murder of the Tanzanian student was just another crime like any other in the violent- ridden Johannesburg. “We are still waiting for our envoy in Johannesburg as well as the South African embassy in Dar es Salaam to come up with the final official report on the matter, but until now we believe the student’s killing was one of the criminal acts currently painting South Africa red,” he said. In 2008, many foreigners living or working in South Africa were being hunted, attacked and even killed in the wave of xenophobic ‘witch hunting,’ in Johannesburg and other major cities of the country. Asked if the incident was rearing its ugly head again, the PS said, “It’s too early to suspect or insinuate the resurgence of xen

Rukwa RC infuriated by premature pregnancies

Image
THE Rukwa Regional Commissioner (RC), Mr Joachim Wangabo has directed District Commissioners to set in motion a process of tracing, arresting and prosecuting pregnant schoolgirls and their parents within 48 hours. The RC issued the order at a public rally at Legeza Mwendo village in Kalambo District, adding that the move was part of the broader campaign to curb a trend that had assumed critical dimensions. He explained that 325 schoolgirls had dropped out of school due top pregnancy between 2015 and 2017, thirty three of them being in primary schools; and worse, most of them were aged below 14. “All 325 cases of pregnant schoolgirls were reported to police stations and the suspects were prosecuted, but they were released over lack of evidence, principally because the girls and their parents defended their children and the culprits,” he remarked, adding: “Some of the impregnated children were merely fourteen years of age; I don’t want to hear any more stories related to child mothers.

AG intervention sought in 16bn/- mineral case

PROSECUTIONS have sought Attorney General’s (AG) intervention to acquire essential exhibits from Australia to complete investigations into the 16bn/- trial against Ndama Hussein, alias “Mtoto wa Ng’ombe.” Senior State Attorney Christopher Msigwa told the Kisutu Resident Magistrate’s Court in Dar es Salaam last week that they have asked the AG to intervene to speed up the case. “We communicated with the Attorney General’s Chamber, asking him to write a reminder notice to our counterparts in Australia, considering this process is taking too long,” the prosecutor told Resident Magistrate Victoria Nongwa. He asked the court to adjourn the case as investigations are still incomplete. Advocate Jeremia Ntobesya, for the accused, said his client is entitled to freedom to continue doing his businesses. He suggested to the prosecution to drop the charges if investigations will take too long and upon completion, re-arrest him. In his rejoinder, trial attorney said the remaining part of the

You read me wrong, says Dodoma boss

DODOMA Regional Commissioner, Dr Binilith Mahenge is unhappy with delays and time spent in implementing the World Food Programme funded irrigation scheme in Chamwino, giving the contractor two weeks to complete the job. The Fufu-Chiboli Irrigation project implemented in Dodoma’s Chamwino district and projected to benefit at least 100 households during rain season and about 400 people in dry-season is farfrom being complete despite the contract indicating November 2017 as a principal deadline. Implemented by the Irrigation Commission in the Ministry of Water and Irrigation at the total cost of 893m/- , the project, involved setting up boreholes, water tank, irrigation systems and a control room. But a tour made by the Regional Chief, Dr Mahenge along with WFP Head of Dodoma Sub-office, Ms Nima Sitta revealed that the project was only completed by 83 per cent and that it could take nearly four weeks to be ready for use. “I can confidently say the project will be ready by first of

RIP Arsene Wenger's Arsenal: 1996-2018

Image
It may not be officially over but Arsenal are limping along on life support while coaches like Pep Guardiola demonstrate what's required at this level Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal will exist – officially – at least until the end of this season. But there’s no life there. It’s gone; all over. Anyone can see that now. Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang came in January but they are CPR signings. There's no plan for them. Under this man, this club is limping along on life support. Please, someone, come in June and have enough humanity to pull the plug and let it die. Then the club can rise again. People like Raul Sanllehi, Sven Mislintat and Huss Fahmy were originally brought to the club to ease the transition from the Wengerian times to the post-Wengerian times. But it's too late. It's no longer a transition. It'll have to be a reincarnation; a 'phoenix from the flames' job.

Laurent Koscielny: Arsene Wenger not solely at fault for Arsenal struggles

Image
Arsenal defender Laurent Koscielny says Arsene Wenger is not solely to blame for their struggles as the Gunners boss all but conceded their top-four hopes. The pressure on Wenger continues to mount after the 2-1 defeat to Brighton left them 13 points adrift of fourth. It was the first time Arsenal have lost four consecutive games since 2002. "As a player, we have responsibility on the pitch and need to be together. It is difficult to say it's his fault or our fault," Koscielny said. Arsenal require both London rivals Tottenham and Chelsea to drop points in their remaining nine Premier League fixtures to have any chance of a top-four finish. Wenger felt his side were "passive", "struggling for confidence" against Brighton and are "going through a tough time" as he acknowledged their hopes of finishing in the Champions League places were slim. "It is very difficult, nearly impossible now, we are too far behind," Wenger said. "
