Chamwino project to be completed this month
AFTER a six month unprecedented delay in the construction of a large irrigation scheme in Chamwino District, Dodoma regional officials came out strongly that the construction will finally be completed by the end of this month.
The Ministry of Water and Irrigation, under its Irrigation Commission is implementing a Fufu-Chiboli irrigation scheme with financial support from the World Food Programme (WFP).
The project covers three villages, each with 100 hectares and projected to benefit 400 -people during the dry-season. Dodoma Zone, Zonal Irrigation Engineer Ms Lucia Lema told the ‘Daily News’ here yesterday that the contractor had completed work on the two projects and is now finalizing work on the final village of Chiboli. “
We expect at the end of next week, the constructor will be done with the job,” she said.It was not clear whether the contractor had filled water in the tanks to test the main canals and its infrastructure,
as Ms Lema fell short of explaining when the formal commissioning of the scheme will be done, but Dodoma Regional Commissioner (RC), Dr Binilith Mahenge had said earlier that villages were eagerly waiting for the completion of the project to improve their livelihood and food security in the region.
Dr Mahenge who visited the project in March this year said he was unhappy with delays and time spent in implementing the World Food Programme funded irrigation scheme in Chamwino, giving the contractor two weeks to complete the job.
The Fufu-Chiboli Irrigation project was far from being complete despite the contract indicating November 2017 as a principal deadline. The total cost for the project was projected at 893m/- ,involving setting up of boreholes, water tank, irrigation systems and a control room.
WFP Head of Dodoma Sub-office, Ms Nima Sitta said the project was vital for income generation to the villagers. The programme was also supporting other socialeconomic activities, including poultry farming among households.
Engineer Godwin Makari of the Irrigation Commission said the project faced uncalculated delays that include flood threats on its Fufu village project. In addition, the Project Manager, Engineer Nelson Maganga, said the project was miscalculated from its initial stage.
