Bank loses case against former employee

STANBIC Bank Tanzania Limited has lost a bid to challenge payments of over 200m/- as compensation to their former Chief Legal Counsel Solomoni Sioi for allegedly wrongful termination of his employment serves.   This follows the decision of the Court of Appeal to “strikeout” with costs an application for stay of execution of a decree of the High Court’s Labour Division at Dar es Salaam regarding the employment dispute. Justices Mbarouk Mbarouk, Augustine Mwarija and Sivangilwa Mwangesi ruled in favour of Sioi, the respondent, after upholding a ground of objection he had presented through his advocate Godwin Nyaisa. They ruled that the application in question was hopelessly time barred as was filed in contravention of the Rule 11 (4) of the Court of Appeal Rules, as amended by Government Notice No. 362 of 2017. Vodacom Tanzania posts 170bn/- net profit

VODACOM Tanzania has registered net profit of 170.2bn/- for the period ended March this year from 47.5bn/- in 2017 representing 200 per cent change on account of strong revenue growth from mobile data and M-Pesa businesses.   The company’s preliminary results for the year ending March 2018 published yesterday, M-Pesa revenue grew by 16.7 per cent to 291.2bn/- equivalent to 30.1 per cent due to greater customer spend across growing mobile ecosystem. Similarly, the Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange (DSE) listed Vodacom Tanzania’s mobile data revenue grew by 34 per cent to 141.6bn/- on account of network densification, capacity upgrade and 4G expansion. “We believe our M-Pesa customer base will continue to expand as we focus on building greater activity through our ‘Lipa kwa M-Pesa’ merchant platform and establishing new partnership which enhances the mobile money ecosystem,” Ian Ferrao, Vodacom Managing Director said in a statement. NMB opens door for local contractors

NMB Bank has embarked on working and facilitating local contractors pursuing public projects countrywide that will enhance their capacity to compete with foreign contractors in undertaking small and mega construction projects.   Temeke Municipal Council Executive Director Nassibu Mmbaga said after opening of one day seminar in Dar es Salaam yesterday that lack of finance is still hindering local contractors to compete with foreign counterparts. “NMB initiative to facilitate local contractors is welcomed in empowering them to compete with foreign contractors in handling small and mega projects implemented in Temeke Municipality and elsewhere,” he said. He added, “Most of the small and mega construction projects in municipal council are implemented by foreign contractors due to low capacity of the local contractors in handling them.” He said with active bank’s participation in facilitating local contractors, more jobs will be created with the projects funds entering into the economy. “

Please to remember, this achievement is apart from it having gained 13 official selections, at a string of other international festivals and the Best African Feature, at the 19th Zimbabwean International Film Festival Trust. IT is Guljit Dhani versus Ahmed Huwel upfront as the race for this year’s National Rally Championship (NRC) continues to be tough after the end of the third round in Iringa over the weekend.   Dhani from Kilimanjaro and Huwel from Iringa are jointly leading the race with 43 points each at the end of Iringa Rally. JACKSON Mmary and his team Rwanda Energy Group (REG) are well set for the epic final match of the Rwanda National Volleyball League title in Kigali after winning a tough playoff over the weekend.   Tanzanian volleyball ace Mmary told the ‘Daily News’ from Kigali yesterday that his Rwandan team fought bravery to win the second playoff match against University of Tourism Technology & Business Studies (UTB). The in-form REG slashed UTB 3-1 again to cruise to the final showdown. REG recorded the same score in the first playoff match a week before and needed another win to sail through. Three food basket regions face malnutrition

DESPITE being in the list of food basket regions in the country, Rukwa, Njombe and Iringa are among five regions whose population, especially children, are facing high level of stunting.   Speaking during a workshop this week in Morogoro, Mkuranga District Council Nutrition Officer, Ms Sophia Boniface, said the 2015/16 Tanzania Demographic and Health Survey (TDHS) showed that prevalence of stunting in Rukwa, Njombe, Iringa, Geita and Kagera regions were above 40 per cent. According to the nutrition expert, poor planning in term of food intake and consumption of the same type of food is the major reason behind such poor nutritional phenomenon. The survey, according to Ms Boniface, indicated that stunting in Rukwa was 56.3 per cent while Njombe had 49.4 per cent. In Kagera, the rate of stunting was 41.7 per cent while Iringa had 41.6 per cent and Geita had 40.5 per cent. OVER 154,800 women in Rukwa Region are expected to rip benefits of the 21.5bn/- safe delivery project dubbed ‘Uzazi Salama’, thanks to a generous funding from Global Affairs Canada and other individual Canadian donors through Plan Canada.   Rukwa Regional Commissioner (RC), Joachim Wangabo officially launched the three and half years project at a colourful event held at the municipality’s RDC Hall over the weekend. THE government has borrowed 120 million US Dollars (approximately 200.7bn/-) from the World Bank (WB) for youth capacity building on vocational training and increase their potentials towards achieving industrial economy by 2025.   The Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Vocational Training, Prof James Mdoe told journalists over the weekend on the sidelines of a forum to discuss youth capacity building that there would be no need for investors to acquire staff from abroad. The forum, sponsored by the Tanzania Private Sector Foundation (TPSF), brought together several stakeholders from private and public sectors who discussed among other things, the need to form sectorial councils to advise the government on the components that needs to be featured in the trainings in question. “The monies we borrowed from the WB will be acquired in the same style like that of higher education. MBEYA Regional Consultative Committee (RCC) has decided to change the name of Songwe International Airport to Mbeya International Airport, to attract more investors and tourists.   The decision was reached during the RCC meeting, following the advice by Mbeya Regional Commissioner, Mr Amos Makalla, who told the meeting that the current name of the airport does not reflect the name of Mbeya Region. He said many people including investors, who visit Mbeya Region, thought that the airport was in Songwe Region, “Some of them even ask how long will it take to travel from Songwe airport to Mbeya Region”, he said. Teach people on protecting environment, RC urges

MOROGORO Regional Commissioner (RC), Dr Kebwe Stephen Kebwe has asked environment officers to teach people on how to protect their surroundings and equally make follow-up checks before capitalising on the law to crack the whip on culprits.   The call was made here when the RC was addressing a three-day workshop of newly appointed 30 environment inspectors from Coast, Morogoro and Tanga regions, during a workshop organised by the National Environment Management Council (NEMC). “I do not expect you to punish people before teaching them how to protect environment,” the RC said in a speech read on his behalf by the Regional Administrative Officer (RAS), Mr Clifford Tandari. The three coastal regions, the RC said, are rich in minerals, fisheries and forestry resources adding that they were attractive to investors. OUT of over 5.5 trillion/- worth of foreign grants donated to boost capital for local industrial developments in five East African countries, only 17 per cent of the sum trickled into Tanzania.   The founder of Tanzania Venture Capital Network (TVCN), Mr Salum Awadh stated that most local investors in the country missed out on the opportunity to get the 2.4 Billion US dollars boost disbursed within a period of six years between 2012 and 2017. Mr Awadh was speaking here, during a special seminar to educate investors, industrialists and entrepreneurs on alternative ways of raising capital for industrial development, in the country. According to Awadh, the grants are usually provided for Eastern African countries including Tanzania and its EAC siblings, Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda as well as Ethiopia but it’s only Kenya which seems to benefit having applied for 60 per cent of the funds, Tanzania got just 17 per cent or around 900 billion/- in six years. More floods likely to haunt EA nations, observers warn

Probably, but international weather observers warn that Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda should not sigh with relief yet, as more thunderous precipitations are expected later this month.   An analysis by the global Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET) and United States Geological Survey (USGS) on the regional forecast and current soil saturation indicates that further flooding is likely to occur later this May in coastal and western regions of Kenya, the Mount Elgon region of Uganda and Kenya, the Lake Victoria basin which also covers Tanzania, eastern DRC, as well as parts of Rwanda and Burundi. The FEWS-NET and USGS report made available here indicate that floods may also be experienced in the central regions and riverine areas of Juba (South-Sudan) and Shabelle regions in Somalia and parts of Ethiopia. Transit oil cargo at Dar port grows by 50 per cent

TRANSIT oil cargo through the Dar es Salaam port grew by 48.5 per cent in the first months of this year as compared to corresponding period last year.   According to the country’s Petroleum Bulk Procurement Agency (PBPA) data, transit fuel shipped through the port increased by 49 per cent, thanks to efficiency and reforms at the Dar es Salaam port. “The agency is happy to announce that it has recorded a steady growth in transit fuel since the Bulk Procurement System was established in 2015,” PBPA Acting Director General Erasto Simon told the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy and Minerals here over the weekend. During the 2016/17 Financial Year, the government scrapped off Value Added Tax (VAT) on transit cargo, subsequently fuelling the volume of containers handled at the port by 35 per cent. EAST African Community (EAC) and International Labour Organisation have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to improve the work environment in East Africa.   The MoU that EAC Secretary General Ambassador Liberat Mfumukeko and ILO Country Director Wellington Chibebe inked at the EAC headquarters here will among other things address issues like youth employment, social security, gender equality and women empowerment at the work place. The MoU is a follow up to another deal that the two organisations signed in 2001, enabling the EAC and ILO to develop and launch a five-year East African Decent Work Programme (2010-2015).
