Madina second in Entebbe Ladies Open
TANZANIA’s golf star, Madina Iddi put strong efforts in Uganda only to narrowly miss this year’s Entebbe Ladies Open Champion title at the Entebbe Golf Club in Uganda over the weekend.
Madina who was searching her second title in Entebbe, finished second behind the host Irene Nakalembe by a stroke. Madina told the ‘Daily News’ from Arusha yesterday after arriving from Uganda that the tournament was good, but she could not handle the last round pressure.
She said that it was one of the toughest competitions as her closest competitor Nakalembe took control of second round. Madina had flying start, hitting 77 gross at first round to lead Nakalembe by a stroke going to final round of the 36 holes battle.
Despite impressive second round that carded 72 gross she could not repeat her 2013 success that won the event for the first time in Uganda soil. Nakalembe used her home advantage well to hit 70 gross to beat Madina by a stroke to clinch the diadem for the fourth consecutive year.
Madina hit the same 147( 70,77)score that earned her title during the first visit to the lakeside course in Entebbe six years ago. By that time she had beaten the then defending champion and host Flavian Namakula, who has now turned a professional golfer.
But Madina said lack of sponsorship sometimes becomes an obstacle in achieving her goal. Madina said: “At the beginning I was not sure if would travel to Uganda for the tournament, but I secured a support at the very last moment, I could not think twice as I need as many tournaments possible to improve my game.
At this situation you can’t have smooth preparation and play comfortably.” Tournament top five: Irene Nakalembe (UGA) 78, 70- 148, Madina (TAZ) 77, 72- 149, Eva Magala (UGA) 79, 77- 156, Peace Kabasweka (UGA) 85, 79- 164, Rose Azuba (UGA) 84, 86- 170.
