Quartet in action as medal hopes in Australia dwindle
TANZANIA’S medal hopes in the Club Games continued dwindle after Failuna Matanga crashed out of the 10,000m race held in yesterday in Gold Coast, Australia. Failuna who runs in both 5000m and 10,000m races was overpowered by her East African fellows from Uganda and Kenya who eventually claimed all top three positions.
The Tanzanian lady finished 12th overall after spending 32:22.09 ahead of India’s Loganathan Suriya who was timed at32:23.56. Nineteen athletes managed to finish including the last finisher Lineo Chaka of Lesotho who clocked 36:55.77.
Her team was far slower than the World record of 29:17: 45 set by Ethiopian Almaz Ayana. The Commonwealth Games record for the 10,000m race is 31:27: 83 held by a Kenyan Selina Kosgei. The story was not the same for the Tanzania neighbours; Uganda and Kenya in Gold Coast yesterday.
Uganda, however, was in the best form after clinching two medals, in the event that Failuna fared badly. Uganda won two gold medals in men’s 5,000m and women’s 10,000m, beating a powerhouse Kenya in both events.
On opening day it was Joshua Cheptegei in the 5000m and the second day was Stella Chesang who proved strongest and fastest to win a muddling women’s 10,000m in 31:45.30. Stacy Ndiwa took the silver for Kenya, with Uganda also grabbing the bronze through Mercyline Chelangat. Chesang won the race after clocking 31:45.30 ahead of Ndiwa who spent 31:46.36.
Ugandan Mercyline Chelangat was third in 31:48.41. Kenyan Beatrice Mutai was fourth31:49.81 ahead of the fifth-placed Natasha Wodak of Canada who spent31:50.18. Tanzania will be trying its luck today when all four table tennis players will be in action.
Still it won’t be an easy job for them because they will be facing tough opponents. Neema Mwaisyula will be the first in action; she will face Malaysian Yingh Ho.
Malaysia finished third in the team format after beating England in the bronze medal game yesterday.
The team Tanzania captain Masoud Mtalaso will go next by facing Antoine Bernadet of Canada while the third contender is Fathiya Pazi who is pitted Brenda Katepu of Tuvalu.
The last attempt in table tennis singles is assigned to Amani Tumaini who will test skills of Tulimanu Vaea of Tuvalu.
