Drivers be warned, counsels insurance agency manager
THE Tanzania Insurance Regulatory Authority (TIRA) says it will crack down on fake vehicle insurances in Dodoma Municipality, a move that aims to curb the growing problem of the forged vehicle insurance in the designated capital city.
TIRA manager for Central Zone, Ms Stella Rutaguza told the ‘Daily News’ here yesterday that the insurance watchdog which has teamed up with Police Force in the crackdown had so far impounded 14 vehicles, five rickshaw motorcycles and two motorcycles withforged insurances.
“Some 500 vehicles were inspected in the crackdown in different areas of Dodoma municipality last week,” the Central Zone TIRA boss said while briefing this newspaper on the ongoing exercise.
Ms Rutaguza said the exercise will be a sustainable one in order to kick out the problem in Dodoma municipality, urging owners of vehicles to stop purchasing vehicle insurance from briefcase offices.
She said vehicle owners can verify if vehicle insurance cover is genuine through TIRA MIS app, pointing out that the app which can be downloaded from internet in computer or smartphones Ms Rutaguza observed that it was vital to get genuine motor insurance cover because it provides financial protection against physical damage or bodily injury resulting from traffic collisions and that offers financial protection in the wake of theft or damage to the vehicle involved in an accident.
On his part, Dodoma Regional Police Commander (RPC) Gilles Muroto, said a 32 year old man was arrested in connection with fake vehicle insurances in Dodoma municipality, saying the suspect who was identified as Yunus Ramadhani is held at Central Police Station pending investigation into the matter.
He said Ramadhani, who has no business licence, was found with forged motor insurance cover notes of different insurance firms, saying the suspect works as marketing officer at Boxer motorcycle brand dealers in its Dodoma Regional Branch.
“The suspect has denied the government billions of revenues from the illegal business of selling forged vehicle insurances,” the RPC told a press conference over the weekend.
