Quadruple set, Simba see dawn

KAGAME Cup Champions Azam secured a ticket to play Gor Mahia at the Kagame Cup semis following their 4-2 win over Rayon Sport at the National Stadium yesterday.

Hassan Iddi Chilunda was the match hero as he netted all four goals, a feat that also earned the tournament its first hat-trick. Azam will play Kenya Champions, Gor Mahia in the semi final match tomorrow. Chilunda also became the first player to score a quadruple in the ongoing Cecafa Kagame Cup.

Wednesday’s 4pm encounter will be a repeat of the 2015 final at the same venue where Azam beat Gor 2-0 to lift their first ever regional title. The prolific Iddi, who is on his way to Spanish side Tenerife, broke the deadlock in the 20th minute when he leapt highest to head home Ramadhan Singano’s corner kick.

Three minutes later, Azam captain Aggrey Morris had a chance to get in the score sheet but missed his spotkick after Olivier Niyonzima handled the ball in the area while trying to stop Iddi’s effort. Chilunda then doubled the lead from a close range after half hour mark before grabbing his third goal of the game five minutes later.

Abdul Rwatubyaye pulled a goal back for Rayon on the stroke of half time from a corner kick. Rayon captain Pierre Kwizera forced a fine save from goalkeeper Razak Abalora in the 65th minute before the hosts launched a counter attack for Iddi to put the game beyond the Rwandans’ reach and take his tournament’s tally to seven.

Djabel Manishimwe then reduced the deficit in the 82nd minute, but his strike couldn’t stop four star Azam from marching on. Following his team’s win, Chilunda told Azam Sports that he was delighted to have scored the four goals in one match. “We respect Gor, but my dream is to have a farewell game in the final.”

Meanwhile, SIMBA SC Assistant Coach Masoud Djuma said the 1-0 victory over Djibouti’s AS Ports on Sunday revived their hopes of winning CECAFA Kagame Cup title.

The only goal of the tense match at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam was netted by Simba’s newly signed striker Mohammed Rashid in the 65th minute whose expertly taken shot easily past AS Port’s goalkeeper Lumiya Sulait who was the busiest player on the day.

Rashid, the former Tanzania Prisons striker, scored the winner just six minutes after being introduced into the match for Adam Salamba and connected well the final pass from Ghanaian defender Nicholas Gyan who momentarily went upfront to add momentum to the striking force.

AS Ports had a glorious chance to take the lead in the 44th minute but Doualeh Elaheh strike was punched to safety by Simba’s newly signed goalkeeper Deogratius Munishi who made his debut for the Reds in the game.

Addressing media after the match, Djuma said winning the game has given them confidence to lift the silverware. “We played against a good side which know how to defend and possess the ball but we kept pushing for the goal until we got it in the second half.

The positive outcome has made us stronger as we aim to lift the trophy from our home soil,” Djuma said. However, the Burundian mentor said he was not convinced with the referee’s performance on the day while insisting that he made several mistakes.

“I dislike commenting on referees but today (Sunday), he was unfair. I have never seen such poor refereeing since the start of this tournament,” he said.
