Zim President jets-in for twoday State visit

ZIMBABWEAN President Emmerson Mnangagwa (pictured) will jet into the country today for a two-day State visit at the invitation of President John Magufuli.

This will be his first visit to Tanzania since he assumed office as president in November, last year.

A statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation in Dar es Salaam yesterday revealed that the State visit is aimed introducing the new leader to Dr Magufuli and Tanzanians in general.

Since he assumed office, President Mnangagwa visited Namibia, Zambia, Mozambique, Angola, South Africa, DR-Congo and Botswana.

The statement said that the visit by the Zimbabwean President is crucial for Tanzania in strengthening diplomatic, social and economic relations between the two countries.

During his visit, President Mnangagwa will hold talks with his Tanzanian counterpart and provide a chance for the two Heads of State to discuss regional and international issues concerning the two countries.

He will also visit Kaole Wazazi College of Agriculture in Bagamoyo which was earlier used to train freedom fighters from the Southern African countries. President Mnangagwa is one of the people who were trained at the college.

He is expected to leave the country for Zimbabwe on June 29, this year. Last month, President Magufuli invited Mr Mnangagwa to Tanzania when Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) leaders led by former Secretary-General Abdulrahman Kinana visited Harare.

Dr Magufuli extended the invitation to Mnangagwa through Mr Kinana. He commended Zimbabwe for the unparalleled peaceful transition that took place in November, last year and ended Robert Mugabe’s rule.

Last week, Mnangagwa survived an apparent bomb attack at a rally in the city of Bulawayo. The President was in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe’s second city and an opposition stronghold, to campaign for his Zanu-PF party ahead of nationwide elections taking place on 30 July.

Mr Mnangagwa said an object “exploded a few inches away from me - but it is not my time.” Health Minister David Parirenyatwa said 15 people were injured, three of them seriously.

A spokesman for Mr Mnangagwa said that while the President was unhurt, Vice-President Kembo Mohadi suffered a leg injury. Another Vice-President, Constantino Chiwenga, received bruises to his face.
