Yanga hand title to rivals Simba
SIMBA have been crowned Mainland Premier League champions as third-placed Young Africans suffered a shock 2-0 away defeat to Tanzania Prisons in Mbeya yesterday.
Yanga had to win yesterday’s match to at least keep the title race mathematically alive, but they were stunned at Sokoine Memorial Stadium in Mbeya when Eliuta Mpepo and Salum Bosco, scored a goal each after the break.
It meant a defeat or draw for Yanga yesterday was to confirm Simba as the new champions of the league this season. With three matches to end their campaign, Simba’s 65 points tally cannot be reached by any other team in the league.
Yanga, who looked a distant threat to the unbeaten Msimbazi Street lads have played 25 matches and can knock at 63 points do they win their remaining five matches. Second placed Azam, with 49 points, can now reach 58 points if they win all three remaining matches.
Simba have now won 19th league title and their first since 2012. Simba Media and Communication Officer, Haji Manara reacted shortly after Yanga versus Prisons match, saying they won the league title because they were the best team.
“We won the title because we have been the best team, because we won a great amount of points. We have not lost a match (this season) because we are the best team,” bragged Manara.
Manara said on a live interview with Azam TV: “I was in my hotel room in Dodoma and did not switch on TV to watch the match…I only saw on WhatsApp groups that Yanga lost their game to Tanzania Prison to hand Simba the title with matches to spare.
“I’m so happy today… we really fought hard and deserve this achievement. Our players fought hard and we told them to make sure that they win the title after four seasons without the league title.
With a make shift squad, Yanga entered yesterday’s game licking the wounds after being smashed 4-0 in the CAF Confederation Cup by USM Alger of Algeria last Sunday away in Algiers. And it was a slow start to the game as both sides played cautiously.
It was a bit dramatic because only two players sat on the bench for Yanga and in total there were only 13 players with majority of the senior players left in Dar es Salaam.
There was not substitute keeper with injured Beno Kakolanya making his appearance between the posts after months out. Youthful players Maka Edward, Paul Godfrey, Yohana Mkomola and Baruan Akilimali were all handed a start while striker, Matheo Anthony, Abdallah Shaibu and Pato Ngonyani who have not been regulars in the starting line-up also were deployed from the start yesterday.
Apart from Kakolanya, other senior players who started the game yesterday included right wing back Juma Abdul, Emmanuel Martin, while recovering Burundian striker, Amis Tambwe also came in as a late substitute.
In the 17th minute, Benjamin Asukile drilled a power packed shot that was parried off by keeper Kakolanya and from a resultant corner kick, Cleophace Mkandala forced Kakolanya into a full stretch for another corner kick. Yanga goal was under siege as Tanzania Prisons mounted pressure.
The first half was not much better but Kakolanya did well after 38 minutes to tip a Mpepo effort around the post and a minute before the interval, Yanga went close. A cross in by Juma Abdul was headed by Nkomola and slightly sailed wide.
After the break, Prisons came with real intent to win and they pressed Yanga at their own domain.
However, in the 47th minute, Mateo Antony danced past defenders and low shot almost beat the keeper Aaron Kalambo at the far post.
The visitors’ resistant were then broken in the 56th minute, when referee pointed to the spot after Thabani Kamusoko appeared to have handled from Benjamin Asukile. Mpepo stepped in and scored despite the keeper diving the right way.
In the 65th minute, Mohamed Rashid failed to make contact with the ball after clever pass in by Mpepo and with ten minutes to go, Kamusoko tested keeper with a low shot from a set piece but Kalambo was well positioned to gather the ball.
With five minutes to go, Salum Bosco netted the second after a brilliant display by Mohamed Rashid, who dribbled past substitute, Yusuph Suleiman and set up the scorer.
Bosco calmed his nerves three yards out and produced a clever chip past the keeper and sprawling defender Juma Abdul. It was a brilliant composure by the scorer.
