Table tennis players see light in Commonwealth

TABLE tennis players, Fathiya Pazi and Amon Tumaini earned Tanzania the first Club Games victories after beating their opponents from Tuvalu yesterday. Still, the yesterday fixture for Team Tanzania didn’t miss the exit misfortunes as three of them; two table tennis players and an athlete crashed out of the race for medals.

Pazi defeated Brenda Katepu of Tuvalu by 4-0 sets in women’s singles while Tumaini ousted Tulimani Vaea also from Tuvalu by the similar score in the men’s singles.

There were 76 entries in men’s singles and 49 entries in women’s discipline. Tumaini carved 11-3 in the game 1 before posting 11- 4, 11-8 and 11-5 in other three games. He comfortably ended 4-0 winner in his category. Fathiya Pazi began her onslaught with 11-8 in the game 1 and went on to win other there games in 11-6, 17-15 and 14-12.

The duo earned Tanzania first victories after seeing all four boxers, a swimmer and athletes Failuna Matanga and Ali Gulam crashing out of the medal chase.

Tumaini, however, had the best results yesterday as he went on to defeat Vicky Wu of Fiji 4-2 in his second game. Fathiya, who won her first game over Brenda Katepu, failed to win her second game after losing 4-0 to Priscilla Tommy of Vanuatu in her second game.

But it was a sad day for the team’s captain Masoud Mtalaso and Neema Mwaisyula who lost to their Canadian and Malaysian opponents in their men and women’s singles matches. Canadian Antoine Bernadet ousted Mtalaso by 5-1 sets in a closely fought match.

The Canadian posted 11-7 in game 1, inked 11-8 in game 2, 11- 5 in game 3 before the Tanzanian winning 11-7 in game 4. The Canadian finished off his opponent with 11-1 in game 5. Neema Mwaisyula, who faced one of the top seeded players, Yying Ho to have a tough game against her opponent.

The Malaysian won all four games in 11-1, 11-3, 11-7 and 11-1. Mtalaso and Neema will be trying their luck in men’s doubles, women’s doubles and the mixed doubles alongside Pazi and Tumaini who won their first matches yesterday.

Also crashed out yesterday was Antony Mwanga who finished 14th out of 15 athletes who participated in men’s long jump at Carrera Stadium in Gold Coast. Ruswan Samaai of South Africa qualified for the final after jumping 8:06 metres followed by Ifeanyi Otuonye of Turks & Caicos while Daniel Bramble of England was third after jumping 8:02.

Ali Gulam’s second attempt at 200m race was also futile. Gulam who failed to advance in 100m dash, finished 4th in the event that saw athletes from South Africa and New Zealand advance to the next stage.

Gulam clocked 21:46, a time that looked inferior to 20:89 clocked by Amaso Jobodwana from South Africa or 21:10 notched by the race runner up, Joseph Millar from New Zealand. It was however, Gulam’s personal best time.
