Food output on ascendancy

THE state of production of food crops in the country has improved, reaching 15.9 million tonnes in the 2016/17-2017/2018 seasons, enabling the nation to have a surplus of 2.6 million tonnes. The Prime Minister made the revelation in Dodoma yesterday, when he laid a foundation stone for the construction of silos and grain warehouse at Kizota, on the outskirts of the town.

Having secured a soft loan amounting to US dollars 55 million (124bn/-) from the government of Poland, the government is planning to construct silos and grain warehouses in strategic areas in the country to improve the storage of food crops in the country. According to the prime minister, the fifth phase government would continue creating an environment for increasing food storage capacity from the current 251,000 to 700,000 tonnes by 2025.

Initiatives to that end include building financial capacity for the Ministry of Agriculture through the National Food Reserve Agency (NFRA). Others are construction of food processing industries to add value to crops before exporting them, a measure that creates employment opportunities to the Tanzanians. “The government has opened its borders and will continue searching for markets in other countries, including improving crop storage infrastructures by building modern silos and grain warehouses in all areas with high crop production,” he said.

The prime minister urged farmers and the general public to capitalise on the projects where silos and grain warehouse would be constructed by increasing crop production to boost their income, thereby contributing to the country’s economic growth. He said the government has invested a huge chunk of money into the project, saying upon its completion, the nation would reap huge benefits.

He ordered NFRA officials to ensure that stored crops were not destroyed. “The government’s strategy is to build capacity for NFRA to have a sufficient food reserve to cater for emergencies. We also throw our weight behind creation of a favourable environment for farmers and traders to sell crops outside the country without obstacles. The prime minister ordered officials in the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Finance and Planning and regional commissioners from regions where the programme would be implemented and Tanzania Building Agency (TBA) to ensure the project wascompleted within the agreed timeframe.

NFRA Acting Chief Executive Officer, Ms Vumilia Zikankuba, said the project would be implemented in eight NFRA zones, which are Dodoma (Dodoma), Mpanda (Katavi), Songea (Ruvuma), Makambako (Njombe), Mbozi (Songwe), Sumbawanga (Rukwa), Shinyanga (Shinyanga) and Babati (Manyara). In Dodoma zone, NFRA would construct new silos with the capacity to store 20,000 tonnes, raising the total storage capacity to 59,000 tonnes. Currently, the NFRA has the capacity to store 39,000 tonnes in the zone.

The Polish government signed an agreement with Tanzania by issuing a soft loan amounting to US dollars 55 million (124bn/-) in September 2015 to increase the country’s capacity to reserve food. The implementation of the agreement between NFRA and the contractors started last December. The project would be implemented for 18 months, meaning that by 2020 it should be completed. Polish Ambassador to Tanzania, Mr Krzyszt Buzalski said the project would, among other things, help step up bilateral ties between Poland and Tanzania.
