Explicit song to continue facing axe
THE government said it will keep axing sexual explicit songs and subsequently impose ban on all misbehaving artistes, in an attempt to protect customs and Tanzanian cultural practice.
Minister for Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, Harrison Mwakyembe, told the National Assembly yesterday that apparent measures currently being instituted by the government are not freakish and will frequently be taken against artists who go astray.
He said such measures were also being implemented across the world. Of late, the government has been implementing a number of measures including barring artistes producing controversial songs, but a number of MPs were against the move.
“This is done everywhere. In US, rapper Rick Ross who also featured Diamond in one of his songs was recently forced to apologise for his insensitive remarks about women he made in a new song. The song was also banned,” he said.
Such measures have also been imposed to a Nigerian singer, songwriter and record producer, Davido. Ojuelegba hit maker Wizkid had also faced the government wrath.
In DR Congo, Koffi Olomide’s Ekotite is barred due to ethical reason, the minister said.
Minister Mwakyembe was forced to explain the measures following remarks by Special Seats MP Catherine Magige (CCM) in the National Assembly yesterday, demanding to know why the government officials were doing the job which was meant to be done by the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) national content committee and the National Arts Council.
