Yanga date Singida United in ASFC last eight
YOUNG Africans will play against Singida United in the quarterfinals of the Azam Sports Federation Cup (ASFC) slated at Namfua Stadium in Singida.
This is in accordance with the competition’s draw which was conducted yesterday at Azam TV headquarters in Dar es Salaam. Yanga fought hard to cruise into the quarterfinals of the tournament thanks to a 2-1 victory over Majimaji in Ruvuma last weekend, whereas Singida United got the better of Polisi Tanzania after registering a thrilling 2-0 triumph.
In other fixtures, Tanzania Prisons will host JKT Tanzania at Sokoine Stadium in Mbeya, before witnessing Azam FC battling up with Mtibwa Sugar at Azam Complex in Dar es Salaam. The Ice-cream side bundled out of the competition KMC by 3-1 to reach into the jam-packed last eight category, while Mtibwa Sugar mercilessly overpowered Buseresere by 3-0 at Nyamagana Stadium in Mwanza.
Also, the last quarter-final encounter will involve Stand United against Njombe Mji to be staged at Kambarage Stadium. Both Stand United and Njombe Mji cruised into the last eight following post-match penalty wins. United defeated Dodoma FC 4-3 on spot kicks as the normal period of play ended scoreless while Njombe Mji defeated Mbao by 6-5 on penalties after a 1-1 draw.
All the remaining eight teams into the lucrative ASFC do trade in the Mainland Premier League such that there is no underdog at this point as each team has necessary facilities to win the title and be granted a once in a time chance of flying high the country’s flag in CAF Federation Cup assignments. Meanwhile, Azam FC captain Himid Mao is set to lead his side in their crucial Mainland Premier League clash against Stand United slated this evening at Azam Complex in Dar es Salaam.
This was confirmed yesterday by the club’s Communication Officer, Jaffar Idd, who said Mao’s return is a big boost towards registering positive results. “We have received with joy the news that our captain Mao will play against Singida United because he is the leader on the pitch who constantly tells his colleagues what to do during the match,” Idd said.
Mao, who also serves as Vice skipper for the country’s senior football team ‘Taifa Stars’ was ruled out of action for three weeks after picking up a knee injury during a scoreless league encounter against Lipuli FC. He also missed his side’s impressive 3-1 Azam Sports Federation Cup (ASFC) victory over KMC last week, the results which saw the Ice cream side making it into the last eight of the tournament.
Commenting on today’s match, Idd narrated that United are a good team hence they will be compelled to play cautiously in order to get maximum three points at home. “They (United) have just been promoted into the top flight league this season and have already proved that they are not a side to take for granted,” he said.
It will be the battle between the third and fourth league table occupants with a single point separating the two sides. Azam have bagged 35 points from 19 matches while United are fourth having attained 34 points respectively.
