FIFA hailed, summit rocks TZ
PRIME Minister Kassim Majaliwa has hailed FIFA top brass for picking Tanzania as a venue for its Executive Football Summit.
Speaking with sports editors at his office in Dar es Salaam yesterday, the PM said bringing the summit to Tanzania is a big honour to success-hungry Tanzanians, hence FIFA and the African football governing body CAF deserve big applauds for the move.
The Premier said he was impressed by efforts being done by both FIFA and CAF in creating clean sportsmanship by fighting corruption in football. “What both Fifa and CAF are doing in fighting corruption while increasing efforts in developing youth and women football are highly commended,” said the PM in his meeting with Fifa and CAF entourage.
Responding, Fifa President Gianni Infantinno thanked Tanzanians for the hospitality they accorded him and his team and asked the Prime Minister Majaliwa to convey his gratitude to the country’s President John Magufuli.
Infantino said they picked Tanzania after being impressed by its campaign to fight corruption and the hospitality of its people whom he said wear smiling faces whenever he sees them. President Infantino said there is a progress in Tanzanian football and named Mbwana Samatta who plays for the Belgian top flight league, CRK Genk as the indication.
He said he was delighted to see the Tanzania PM a good football enthusiast as FIFA class coach and former football player. Fifa President handed PM Majaliwa a jersey number 9 of FIFA-select squad as present, while the Premier awarded FIFA and CAF top brass with ebony carvings as worthy traditional gift
Meanwhile, FIFA President Infantino has expressed pleasure to jet in Dar es Salaam for FIFA Executive Football Summit (EFS), held yesterday at the Julius Nyerere International Convention Centre (JNICC) in Dar es Salaam
. Infantino, who arrived mid night, was welcomed by the Minister of Information, Culture, Arts and Sports Harrison Mwakyembe, accompanied by Director of Sports in the Ministry Yusuf Singo, Chairman of the National Sports Council (NSC) Leodeger Tenga and the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) President Wallace Karia.
“I’m pleased to be here in Tanzania and looking forward for a successful summit. Please pass my sincere regards to President John Magufuli for a good gesture and welcoming us to stage this summit here,” said Infantino.
Welcoming president Infantino and his delegation, Minister Mwakyembe said they have come at the right place and assured them that they will enjoy Tanzanian hospitality and good weather. Late yesterday, Infantino and some members of the delegation were due to pay courtesy call to Prime Minister, Kassim Majaliwa.
The summit was chaired by president Infantino and brought together presidents and general secretaries of 21 FIFA member associations on the same table. Also, key figures who took part in the crucial summit include FIFA Vice-President David Gill, FIFA General Secretary Fatma Diouf Samoura and CAF President Ahmad Ahmad.
Tanzania was selected as a Member Association to host one of the 12 FIFA EFS meetings, which begun last November and will stretch up to March this year, as part of President Infantino’s vision of ‘bringing FIFA back to football and football back to FIFA.
During the summit delegates were expected to discuss the FIFA Forward programme, the future of youth and women’s competitions and opportunities for improving the transfer system and international match calendar. They reported on their experiences and country-specific issues and updated themselves on the global game.
The summit provided all of the delegates with an opportunity to share their knowledge and coordinate next steps. With all of the participants sharing the same goal – to promote the game – they met in the knowledge that their development efforts will ultimately benefit not only their own countries, but the footballing world as a whole.
