Image
A GROUP of 36 African-Americans has arrived in Tanzania for a fact-finding mission to discover their ancestral origin. The group, which landed at Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA) on July 10, 2018, has embarked on their trip in the northern tourism circuit to learn their ancestral origin. Parks Adventure Ltd, the travel company behind the group, said the trip, the first of its kind in Tanzania, would enable the African-Americans to explore their ancestral history through places, objects and tastes. The African-Americans say they have passionate interest in bridging the cultural gap by coming back home to explore their heritage and fill the void. “Much as America was founded by immigrants, we hold our ancestral heritage near and dear. That’s why we seek to learn more about the land of our ancestors,” the leader of the Afro-American tourists, Ms Betty Arnold, told a press conference in Arusha. High Court verdict on Coco Beach nullified

Image
COURT of Appeal has nullified the High Court’s proceedings and judgment that ruled in favour of Q-Consult Limited over ownership of Coco Beach shore in Dar es Salaam. Justices Kipenka Mussa, Richard Mziray and Gerald Ndika reached the decision while determining an appeal lodged by Kinondoni Municipal Council after noting some irregularities by the High Court Judge who presided over the dispute. They argued that one of the irregularities related to Judge Agathon Nchimbi to have taken over the conduct of proceeding from another High Court Judge Hamisa Kalombola without assigning any reasons for the move as required under the Civil Procedure Code. “In exercise of our powers under section 4 (2) of the Appellate Jurisdiction Act, we quash and set aside the proceedings before Judge Nchimbi, as well as the judgment and decree dated July 23, 2015,” the justices declared in their recent judgment in Dar es Salaam. For the sake of convenience and interest of justice, they also quashed and set a

THE Attorney General (AG) has won another case in a dispute over payments of government subventions to political parties in Tanzania. This follows the decision of the Court of Appeal to dismiss with costs an application for review lodged by Registered Trustees of Democratic Party (DP), seeking to challenge some provisions under the Political Parties Act relating to the funding system. Justices Bernard Luanda, Augustine Mwarija and Rehema Mkuye ruled against the opposition party, previously chaired by Rev. Christopher Mtikila (who is deceased) after noting that the application did not meet the required tests to warrant the court to review its decision on the matter. In the application, the DP was requesting the court to review its judgment for refusing to nullify Act No. 11 of 1996 for allegedly being unconstitutional and discriminatory, by denying the party government subventions which were paid to the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) and Civic United Front (CUF).
